Unconventional Fame

I knew social media was the wave of the present and future, but I had no idea the extent that social media has changed people’s lives until I read an old Time Magazine article for my PR & Social Media class.

Entitled ‘Power To The People’, this article highlights some of the many people who have impacted society world wide through their social media activities.  The article covers people from soldiers blogging from the front lines to students bringing down political campaigns with their video cameras to a guy who updates Wikipedia posts for fun.  Having a keen interest in pop-culture and music myself, I was most interested in the section of the article featuring media anomaly Tila Tequila.

Tila tequila of MySpace fame

Tila Tequila is a tiny Vietnamese model who is best known for her shameless self promotion on MySpace (before it was a cesspool of porn stars and amateur musicians looking for their big break) and bi-sexual antics on MTV’s ‘Shot at Love with Tila Tequila’.  Now maybe I have just crawled out from under a rock somewhere, but I was unaware that she was “discovered” on MySpace for having more friends than almost anyone else.  From MySpace she was somehow able to parlay her way into a TV show, modeling gigs, music recording contracts and other sources of income.  Incredible seeing as how this girl really doesn’t have any discernible talents. Since this article was written in 2006 Tila has launched a sequel to her show and made big news for playing surrogate mother for her brother.

All in all, this goes to show that making a splash on the internet can translate into fame and money.  Now get out there and be somebody!!

Yeah, that’s one thing I am worried about social media. It’s open to everyone means it can be used both in a good and bad way. For some really talented people, social media provides a platform to make their dreams come true. But for some people without talent who still wants to raise a hoo-ha among the public, social media becomes the seedbed of their stinky products.

And yet, I can’t hate on them because if you can make your lack-of-talent work for you then more power to you! At the end of the day we don’t have to buy what they’re selling and can always look away, which is the coolest thing about the internet – abundant choice!

  2. I’d like to think that for the most part the best and brightest will end up rising to the top of fame and fortune in the long run. Hopefully Tequila is the outlier for a new mass media that is still in its infancy. Do you think incidents like this effect the credibility of Social Media?
